If you have camped for any length of time, with children, you know how hard it is to keep their enthusiasm up. The secret to having tiny happy campers is to keep them busy!
These activities are our absolute favorites for hiking, camping, or just having fun hanging out together in our back yard!
No cheap, toxic toys, no electronic devices, and you probably have everything you need already for hours…and…HOURS…of family fun!
1. Light Painting
Takes a while to get the hang of this but it is so worth it! You will need a camera that allows longer exposures and a tripod. Your head lamps work just as well as glow sticks and will not create waste.
Just set up the camera, grab a headlamp, and let your imagination run wild!
2. Critter watching in the water at night!
We did this while vacationing at Assateague Island National Seashore and we were ALL just hooked for hours! Any pond or stream nearby will do, the diversity of aquatic life any place will surprise you and delight the kids!
This was sort of an accidental discovery…the Rangers mentioned the bio-luminescent comb jellyfish that inhabit the marshes, so we went to the old ferry landing at dusk looking for those. We saw a few flashes, not much as far as those go. But we stayed for HOURS discovering the many other critters that roam the marshes at night and had the BEST TIME!
This was so much fun, and we have some beautiful photos to show for it! Find an interesting place and DO THIS! Any point and shoot camera with a timer will work (these photos were taken with our phones and a couple of really old point and shoots), all you need is a tripod.
Set up a good hour or so before the sun gets low on the horizon so you can practice before the sky gets really awesome!
